Neil M. Boumpani, PhD
B.A. Music Education - Trenton State College (the College of New Jersey) M.A. Composition - Trenton State College Ph.D. Music Education - University of North Carolina at Greensboro --------------------- 17 YEARS OF PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHING IN NEW JERSEY AND NORTH CAROLINA 18 YEARS AS DIRECTOR OF THE DUKE UNIVERSITY MARCHING AND PEP BANDS PRESENTLY ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MUSIC, GORDON COLLEGE, GEORGIA -------------------------------------- Since 1978, Neil Boumpani has been composing and arranging for all types of musical ensembles, solo instruments and vocalists. At first, it was a passion. One evening, a vocalist performed a moving rendition of My Funny Valentine with his small jazz group at Trenton State College. During the break, they talked about how nice it would be to have her sing with the college's Jazz Band, then directed by Tony DeNicola. Neil went back to his apartment, laid out 20 pieces of manuscript paper, and proceeded to write an arrangement of Valentine for female vocalist and 18 piece jazz band. After hearing the band play the piece, Tony DeNicola, recognizing the passion Neil had for arranging, encouraged him to begin private orchestration study with legendary arranger Frank Hunter. Frank Hunter had arranged thousands of works for many of the great singers and bands of the 40's, 50's 60's and had served as music director for the Mike Douglas television show. Frank was an inspirational teacher who loved working with young musicians. Frank showed Neil the foundations of writing for musical ensembles, and that good writing was based on the composer's ability to listen, write, listen, and rewrite. In 1987, Neil took over the struggling Duke University Marching Band where his arranging skills quickly revived the group and began to excite the crowds at football and basketball games. Over the 19 years Neil directed the Duke Blue Devil bands, he wrote every single arrangement played on the field, and most of the arrangements and compositions they played in the stands. Many of his pieces are still heard today at Duke games. Over the years, Neil has written quite extensively for high school and college marching bands. Many of the high schools using his arrangements received superior ratings at festival. Neil has prided himself in being able to take any band, regardless of size, level or instrumentation and making it sound great. His years of experience, based on the excellent instruction he received from Frank Hunter, have enabled him to make any band sound better, bigger, and more balanced. Currently, Neil is a tenured associate professor at Gordon College in Barnesville, GA., where he is in charge of building the instrumental music program, teaching theory and percussion, and directing the concert band and percussion ensemble. Of course, he is constantly writing for all of the groups, along with recital pieces for his students. Neil has recently branched out into the world of film scoring using computer sequencing and sampling. Neil currently resides in Barnesville, Georgia, with his wife, Dawn. They have two married daughters, Yvonne in Texas, and Kimberly in North Carolina. They welcomed their first grandchild, Madison Anne, last summer.
